HUMPHREYS SCHOOL OF MUSICAL THEATRE

Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS), 800 Bagby, 713-558-2600
Classes are offered for students ages 4-18. Some sessions focus on audition skills, film, costume design and set construction. “We have designed all of our education programs utilizing the elements of musical theatre – sing, dance, act – as a way to engage children, address social issues, enhance overall learning and life skills, create self-assured individuals, increase skill development in other course work, and enhance the family dynamic,” says Bob Lawson, Director of Administration & Education at TUTS. Another wonderful program at TUTS is The River Performing and Visual Arts Center. The River serves children with special needs ages 2-19. “Our philosophy is that every child, regardless of ability, should have an opportunity to experience musical theatre in some form,” says Lawson.

HITS THEATRE

311 W. !8th Street, 713-861-7408
Musical Theatre Classes are offered for children ages 5-18. Singing, dancing, acting and auditioning are included in the rehearsal-based curriculum. All students participate in a fully-staged production at the end of each session. Classes are divided into age groups: Broadway Beginnings for students in 1st through 3rd grades; Broadway Juniors for students in 4th through 6th grades; and Main Stage Company for students in 7th through 12th grades.

MAIN STREET THEATER

2540 Times Boulevard, 713-524-9196
Core acting classes are offered for children ages 4 through Teens. Students create their own characters, write their own play, build their own sets, and perform the original production at the end of each session. “Our vision for Houston is for all kids to have an opportunity to participate in the performing arts. Main Street is a performing arts playground. There’s structure and supervision but the creations are very student directed. Kids have ownership,” Troy Scheid, Director of Education tells ParentsPost.com. “We hope kids will value their own creative instincts. Our main emphasis is creativity and collaboration.”
